Astha Fine Indian Cuisine

We went there for supper and were pleasently suprised. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere is very quaint, love the decor.

Best food I have ever tasted ever. I am in oil field bussiness. I have traveled all ovet the world. This was the best. I will come again.

We have eaten Indian food in many locations in Calgary...the food at Astha is fabulous...the service is great...the atmosphere is interesting. We usually dine at Astha on special occasions. If you want plies of food go to a chain restaurant...we usually take leftovers. Very Well done....

The food was great however the bill did not match what we ordered. They refused to correct the bill and still added the 20% unoptional gratuity to our bill because 2 others that we knew came into the resturant and sat with us instead of at thier own table, we asked for seperate reciepts and he would not give them to us. We had to calculate what we owed and what the friends that joined us owed. Also he rang the total through the till first and then added the tip to the bottom, not rung through the till making it so the business does not claim the tip amount on thier submission of GST. for those that have ever wondered, here is our Canadian law on gratuities. Consistent with Canada Revenue Agency rules (RC4036(E) Rev. 06)
gratuities that customers voluntarily give to employees are not taxable for GST purposes,however, gratuities included as a mandatory or suggested amount as a service charge is GST taxable.

My husband and I usually get Astha for takeout at least once a month. It is always amazingly delicious and our 3 year old devours the naan and butter chicken! We did dine in at the restaurant once, and the atmosphere was nice, but our server was a dud. He spoke to us like we didn't know anything about indian cuisine and when our friend asked for something not too spicy, he recommended the vindaloo (which is one of the hottest items on the menu!!). So, the food is amazing, but the service, if you get the same guy we got, isn't the greatest.

The food and the atmosphere were fanstistic. Real Indian food in Red Deer! and the restaurant also caters too.

The food at Astha is absolutely fantastic. And the service is excellent. Anyone who says this food is very, very bad must be the competition or someone out to take these folks down because it is an awesome place to eat. We tried 6 dishes - 3 with meat and 3 veggie dishes. Also two kinds of rice and three kinds of nan. Their mango drink is out of this world. We can't think of anything bad to say about the Astha Restaurant, from the food, the service and right down to the decor. It was an awesome and pleasant experience!

AWESOME! Unlike the people below, I have actually BEEN in the kitchen here. The owner, Sonya, graciously offered me a tour after many visits. I witnessed mounds of fresh veggies, marinating meats, pots of sauce and a tandoori oven baking naan on it's walls. If you find the portions small you can certainly eat more than me- I always get a take out carton for leftovers. Perhaps you'd be happier eating at an all-you-can-eat buffet? Or Denny's. It's not many restaurants you'll find these days who will open the kitchen and always remember it's loyal customers. Sheesh- I think think this place is great!

This restaurant used to be very good but I feel like it is going downhill. For the price of the food I expect that the vegetables not be canned or frozen vegetables. The mushroom curry is made from canned mushrooms. It is rather disgusting that a restaurant with such a great atmosphere would use canned mushrooms in the curry and frozen vegetables in other curries. The food is also not spicy enough and a lot of the dishes taste the same just with different canned or frozen vegetables. The atmosphere is great but they need to try harder in the food department. If you are going to have an Indian restaurant hire an Indian chef. No if ands or buts.

The food is by no means what it is on the menu we ordered vindaloo which i've never know to be a mild meal (NOT SPICEY) we had take out for 45 dollars for two meals we had a hard time making one plate full and as other reviews have said the meals are more like soups sorry not somewhere i'll visit again

We went as a group of 5 couples, so we sampled each other's dishes. I don't have an Indian background, so to me the food was fantastic. What really offended me, though, was the fact that I had to order my rice and bread separate from my meal! So, the main course (approx $16) ended up being a medium sized bowl of sauce with a few large chunks of meat in it (looked like a fancy soup), and you had to order the rice for about $4, then an order of indian bread for about $2. There was no side dish of veggies, either. So, for almost $50 my husband and I almost satisfied (as for hunger), but really put off. OH, AND they add your tip to the total, so make sure that, unless you really want to give them more, just pay the total, with no extra tip!

My husband and I just moved to Red deer and we love to try different food. We went to Astha for our 5th year anniversary.. Not only was the food great the service was great and even the owner came out with a gift for us and so on.. W
e'll be going back..I would actually work there is was so pleasant.

When I was in Red Deer on business (Feb 2008), being an Indian origin and away from home for over 2 weeks, I went to this Astha Fine Indian Cuisine. Restaurant is in a very good location and reasonably good decor even service staff is not too bad. But it is probably one of the worst Indian Food I ever tasted.

I ordered Briyani first. What I got was half cooked rice mixed with some curry sauce. I am pretty sure it was not Briyani. I had to return the Briyani, knowing what Briyani all my life, I couldn't eat this stuff. And I ordered Beef curry with Nan. What I was served was some watery spicy sauce with some beef cubes and green pepper. I don't think it was cooked by someone who knows what is Indian Food and there is NOTHING Fine about their food.

There is great potential for this restaurant provided they hire some good experienced Indian cooks. I wouldn't go to this restaurant unless if I know that they have a new chef who has experience in Indian food preparation.

I'm a very picky eater and it was FANTASTIC.
Tried Rimpy's afterwards and it was not near as good as Astha.

Mango ice cream tasted very chemical-y...other than that FANTASTIC!!
